Tonight we are talking about erotic knife play, This is not to be confused with erotic cutting, Erotic knife play is theater of the mind. Erotic cutting is "Operating Theater of the Mind"
Each has their place, but each has very different requirements. Obviously, if you are piercing the skin, there are a host of issues to contend with, we are not going to deal with those this time, except in the most cursory discussion regarding safety and first aid for accidents.
So.......  To Me, erotic knife play brings a submissive right to edge of her fears and her trust of the Dom, (or his, excuse Me). Done correctly, the sub is forced to experience and face the fear of the sharp blade on his or her most intimate areas, yet know at the same time that their Dom is not going to hurt them. It produces an internal quandary of fear, exhilaration and extreme endorphin rush, (not a bad place to be *lol*). In order to achieve that delicate balance, the Dominant has to exercise great restraint, control and knowledge of the submissive's body and also of their reactions and responses, for instance, if your submissive is a "jumper" at slight touches, the Dom needs to know this and be not have him or her jump onto the point of a blade.
I like to have My sub well restrained during this, either arms spread wide and tethered to hooks in the ceiling, held parallel to the shoulders, or on a St Andrew's cross. I like the feet restrained to either ring, cross, spreader. All to keep her from moving too far or much, I don't want a spasm causing a cut or a poke. Remember your safety rules about first aid for cuts. Remember that your knives should be clean so that if You do cut or scrape, you do not infect. And if your sub is bound, check the circulation in the hands frequently. It is very common for a sub to drop into a very endorphin haze during knife play and they might not be able to answer you with a good answer if you ask if they are ok, the Dom needs to be able to see and perceive more than just the spoken word here.

Sex_grandMaster What is Your suggestion for keeping the knives clean, and how often do You clean them?
SirDdr If the knives are stainless steel, a little soap and water will do wonders. If they are tool steel, water may cause the blade to darken or rust of not dried quickly, I use alcohol swabs mostly, I clean them after every use.

SirDdr I think that's a very good thing to do, SGM, considering they were lying God-knows where before the scene and they do have the potential to cut or nick the sub

SirDdr Oh! one more thing about the bondage/suspension, I prefer to use quick releases, ask about them at the end if You need info. I also use thin, soft cotton rope and keep a universal cutting tool in My back pocket for a quick release too.
Why would you need a quick release in knife play? The sub gets injured, passes out, cannot handle it for fear of knives, or a panic attack. Knives CAN induce a panic attack in some, the fear of being cut can be big. Dealing with panic attacks is a topic unto itself, not for tonight, but suffice it to say that if Your sub panics, get them out of the bonds and seek to calm them without the use of knives.

SirDdr I think that goes without saying ( which means it needs to be said *lol*) But I think that panic is something that happens in submissive's who often say "ok,i can do this", and the negotiations have little to do with whether they have a panic attack.

About half of you here have seen Me do knife play at least once, Obviously, knife play is about the teasing as You draw cool steel against hot, susceptible body parts. But there is so much more You can add, it is limited by Your own "ART" and imagination.

SirDdr I like to place a ring holding the strop in My sub's teeth as I sharpen My knives, she can watch the blade drawing up towards her mouth and back, and feel the vibrations through her skull, soft vibrations, intimidating ones, drawing the knife sloooowwly up *grins*.
I also use a sharpening steel and a knife. It makes that sound that everyone recognizes, that swish, swish of steel getting so sharp and scary.

SirDdr If You see the knives on My page, I have a variety of shapes. Some are visually intimidating, very intimidating, for My last demo, I brought out an 18" long curved scimitar, I thought My sub was going to lose bladder control when she saw that.

SirDdr But different knives just "fit" better, for instance, on the page of pics, there is the Blade of Poseidon, it is curved. It wraps around hips and breasts and curls over shoulders so nicely. I am always VERY cautious about slicing motions. I don't use them, I press a blade into the flesh, If I want to draw it along the flesh, I turn it over and use the back of the blade.
Very early on in the scene, the sub will stop watching, they will be focused on the torrent of feelings. So you can start using the back of blades to "cut", I know some of You have seem Me do this, I keep a glass of ice water with a kitchen butter knife in it with Me, The ice cold blade drawn against flesh feels like fire, feels like a cut to the bone, though no skin was broken.
Another very evil thing I did in My last demo was to fill a tiny squeeze bottle with warm water, I drew a dull blade along flesh out of her site, and then a moment letter, squeezed a trickle of warm water down from the "cut" so it would feel like she was bleeding. Be careful doing this one, with a stranger or someone inexperienced with knife play, it could cause a panic.

So, to bring this to a conclusion, I work a dance, an erotic dance, and as I go along the play gets rougher, with breaks for a little sensual kiss, a hand in a needy place, and My signature ending is to physically support My sub while giving her the pommel ( rounded end) of the handle to cum against. I have not done this with a male, but I am sure that with a male, the fear of castration is surely one that the Dom can work with to create a wild ride, ...and I would leave the method of getting Your male sub off to Your discretion *lol*
