square, wood handle (Dom Depot), fabric pencil, Hammer, Spray paint (optional), Alum. foil, contact cement, utility knife or rotary cutter and
upholstery nails (Dom Depot)
Here are some pictures that you can follow along with the presentation.
Toy Presentation pictures
SirDdr . o O (good photo set *s*)
SGMs_annie . o O ( great pics! )
Sex_GrandMaster . o O ( yes they are )
Black_Owl Thank You, nikki took all the photos
Black_Owl mark and cut out a rectangle of leather, the length should be the length desired for your tails + 1 1/2 for handle mount, width should
equal the number and width of tail desired, i.e. 10 in. will give you 20 1/2 in tails. Don't worry if its done right it won't look cheesy ...LOL
The handle can be painted, stained or left plain. Once you have your rectangle cut out, make the lines for your tails, leave 1 1/2 at the bottom
for the handle. Make sure your cuts are clean and be careful with the blade, ... ask me how I know...LOL
SirDdr :. o O (how do You know?)
SirDdr :.o O (I always wanted to be the straight Man)
Black_Owl I've cut myself more than once.
emma :chuckles
Black_Owl LOL, take your time.
SGMs_annie :. o O ( that's not knife play )
Black_Owl nope...LOL
emma :raises her hand
Black_Owl Yes
emma
emma do You have any tips for cutting leather, besides a sharp blade? It can be quite tiring on the wrist
Black_Owl
emma , a rotary cutter is much easier on the wrist, stretch your hands and wrist B4 you start and take breaks when needed. I've had wrist
problems ...no fun
emma thank You
Sex_GrandMaster sits back and listens
Black_Owl Once you have the tails cut out....you can begin to roll them onto the handle fig6&7. Make sure to keep the material tight , smooth and
straight as you roll, make sure everything will line up B4 you apply the cement. I call it a practice roll...LOL
buttercup :listens
Black_Owl If everything looks good....apply contact cement to the surfaces to be bonded. Be careful with the cement as neatness is reliability.
Bert :raises hand
Sex_GrandMaster :listens
Black_Owl Once cement is applied..carefully roll fig7, remember tight, straight and smooth. Once you're done rolling you should have something
that looks akin to fig8.
Black_Owl Yes
Bert
Bert What exactly is the handle, and is it straight or tapered where the leather is attached?
Black_Owl The handle is from Home Depot and started its life as an early American furniture leg, it's rounded where the leather is attached,
rolling it will be very easy.
Bert Thank You
Black_Owl note that it does come with a screw in it...easily removed with a pair of pliers, With that done it's a perfect turned handle.
Once you have everything all rolled up your creative side can run wild.
SGMs_annie :raises my hand
Black_Owl Yes annie
SGMs_annie Sir once it is rolled up do i put more glue on it, or does the glue go along the edge that is rolled?
Black_Owl annie, you can if you need to, but be careful you don't want globs of glue showing, I usually leave the last inch or so clean
until I'm almost done.
Sex_GrandMaster :nods
Black_Owl That way you know exactly where you need glue.
SGMs_annie thank You Sir *S*
Black_Owl For this one I used the upholstery nails to finish. But you can decorate in any style you wish, fig10 shows this one done
NelsonX : raises hand
Black_Owl fig11&12 shows two different styles.
Black_Owl Yes Nelson
NelsonX have you ever drilled through the leather and handle and used a rivet type fastening to secure the leather?
Black_Owl Nelson, I use various methods...keep in mind that this is a easy version...LOL
NelsonX I was thinking more for a heavier type of flogger
Black_Owl If you feel adventurous, you can do it the hard way..the way I usually do...I hand cut and apply each tail separately. But E/everyone
has T/their own style. Nelson, I personally don't like to use nails as they work against the leather over time.
NelsonX that's kind of what I was thinking... the stresses can tend to tear the leather
Black_Owl I normally use the old method where each piece locks the next piece, but that's a lot of work...LOL
SGMs_annie :raises my hand
Black_Owl Something like that can take a few days.
Black_Owl annie
SGMs_annie Sir, what is the alum foil for?
SirDdr :.oO(for the brownies, annie)
emma :.o O ( i was just thinking of asking that question )
Black_Owl annie, its better to do your gluing on, it'll save your table and many things around you...LOL
SGMs_annie thank You Sir *S*
Black_Owl when you're done just throw it away
emma :.o O ( my favorite method of clean-up )
SGMs_annie :.o O ( mine too )
Sex_GrandMaster :chuckles
Black_Owl annie, it'll save you come time when SGM tried this at home...LOL
NelsonX or recycle it for next time if not too much glue on it
Sex_GrandMaster :o O ( I suppose Y/you could also use wax paper )
SirDdr :.o O (no, not wax paper)
Sex_GrandMaster LOL Owl
SirDdr :raises hand
SGMs_annie :laughs
Black_Owl Sir D
SirDdr As an expert on wood finishing, I can tell you that you don't want your wood handle to pick up any kind of wax before you put the final finish on it.
Sex_GrandMaster : . o O ( Ohhhhhhhh good point )
Black_Owl can't argue with the wood expert, Sir D, We have to talk I might need some custom handles in the future.
SirDdr Ok, Owl
Black_Owl any more questions?
NelsonX :*nods*
Sex_GrandMaster : raises His hand
Black_Owl If Y/you wish to see other things that I've done Y/you can view them on my Yahoo profile, black_arrow152k
NelsonX Owl, do you give much though to balancing the weight of the tails versus the handle?
Black_Owl or ask SGM or Sir D...I think they have some pics of some of my other work, Nelson, of course but I tried to keep this simple,
I usually use lead shot loaded into the handle.
NelsonX Understood
Sex_GrandMaster In fig.12 it looks like one is painted and the other is stained, was this done last?
Black_Owl This is a basic
Black_Owl SGM, painting or other wood finishing should be done first and allowed to dry and cure
Sex_GrandMaster :nods
Black_Owl The blue one was left unfinished. You could also finish the handle with an oil rub.
Sex_GrandMaster :nods
Black_Owl of course anytime you use chemicals and such things...follow the directions and precautions
SirDdr if You ever plan to use the handle for insertion, consider not using an oil finish...better to use a hard, closed film like enamel paint or polyurethane
Black_Owl Thank You, Sir D
NelsonX what about something like tool dip?
Sex_GrandMaster :. o O ( Insertion? what a Pervert! )
Black_Owl Most of my pieces for insertion use stainless butt plugs or something of that nature
WS_perfectangel :laffs
SirDdr :.oO (thinks of all kinds of things One might dip their tool into)
Black_Owl Nelson, tool dip works
emma :chuckles
SensualLady lol
NelsonX :*chuckles* Good one DDR
SirDdr has never used plastic tool dip on wood, Nelson...not sure
WS_perfectangel :raises her hand
Black_Owl Nelson, you want fun.....balance a 50 tail flogger with a stainless butt plug at the end..LOL
angel
Black_Owl Sir D, it'll work
NelsonX I haven't either... but have been thinking about it for some of My leather lace floggers
SirDdr cool...learn something new every day *s*
WS_perfectangel tool dip can be used on wood, but I would be careful..some people are very sensitive to it
NelsonX Owl... I need that I'll call You
Black_Owl Just make sure the wood is sanded smooth. Once you do a basic one...just see what else you can come up with
lauraleigh thank You Sir
Black_Owl Most people make a few uglies at first....LOL
SirDdr Before W/we break up for the evening.... I just want to thank Black Owl for a great Demo, It was well
illustrated, and well presented...I learned a bunch.
Black_Owl I hope E/everyone enjoyed it
WS_perfectangel thank You Black Owl Sir
